“ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੁੱਤ ਦੇ ਹੱਥ ਆਪ ਚੂਨੇ ਦੇ ਖੱਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਪਰੇ ਕੀਤੇ। ਉਸਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ—ਪੁੱਤ, ਇਹ ਲਕੀਰ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੀ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਲੱਕੜ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਸਿੱਖ ਲੈ ਜਾਂ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਦੀਆਂ ਛੱਤਾਂ ਪਾ। ਮੇਰੇ ਬਾਪੂ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਾਬਾ ਅਟੱਲ ਰਾਏ ਦੀਆਂ ਦੀਵਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਚੂਨਾ ਲਾਉਣਾ ਸਿਖਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਅੱਜ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਪਾਸੇ ਲੰਘਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਅੱਖਾਂ ਭਰ ਆਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ। ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਸਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਵਿਰਾਸਤ ਦਾ ਆਖ਼ਰੀ ਦੀਵਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਆਪ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬੁਝਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮੇਰਾ ਘਰ ਭੁੱਖਾ ਨਾ ਮਰੇ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“I physically pulled my son’s hands away from the lime pit. I told him, “Son, this lineage ends here; go learn carpentry or cast concrete slabs.” My father taught me lime work on the walls of Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai. Today, when I pass by that complex, my eyes fill with tears. I am the last lamp of my family’s centuries-old legacy, and I extinguished it myself so my home wouldn’t go hungry.”
