“ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ 15 ਸਾਲ ਆਰਾਇਸ਼ (ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ਵਰਗੀ ਚੂਨੇ ਦੀ ਪਾਲਿਸ਼) ਸਿੱਖਣ ਚ ਲਾਏ। ਅਕੀਕ ਦੇ ਪੱਥਰ ਨਾਲ ਦਿਨ-ਰਾਤ ਦੀਵਾਰ ਘਸਾਉਂਦੇ ਸੀ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ਾ ਬਣ ਜਾਵੇ। ਅੱਜ ਲੋਕ ਦੀਵਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਪਲਾਸਟਿਕ ਦੀਆਂ ਸ਼ੀਟਾਂ ਤੇ ਐਕ੍ਰਿਲਿਕ ਪੇਂਟ ਚਿਪਕਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਨੇ। ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਸਾਡੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੀ ਤਪੱਸਿਆ ਦਾ ਮਜ਼ਾਕ ਉਡਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵੇ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“I spent fifteen years of my life mastering Araish—the mirror-finish lime burnishing. We would rub the stone against the damp lime day and night using agate pebbles (aqeeq) until it turned into glass. Today, people glue plastic panels and acrylic paint over walls. When I see that, it feels as if a lifetime of devotion has been reduced to a joke.”
