A shared mortar, a shared world
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
“Our elders used to say that inside the lime pit, there is no religion. In the ancestral havelis of Amritsar, Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh masons worked with their arms dipped in the exact same mortar. Those shared spaces have dissolved. The stone mills where we crushed over-burnt bricks into surkhi are gone. Now pre-mixed chemical sacks arrive from factories. Factories have consumed craftsmanship.”Collection: Oral histories of lime masonry · Curated by Reeva Chopra, Project Zinda Virasat Living Heritage.
