“ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬਾਨਾਂ ਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਚੂਨੇ ਦੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਦੇ ਸੀ। ਚੂਨਾ ਲਾਉਣਾ ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਇਹ ਇਮਾਰਤ ਨੂੰ 500 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਹੁਣ ਕਾਰਸੇਵਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਵੀ ਕਾਹਲੇ ਨੇ, ਛੇਤੀ-ਛੇਤੀ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਟਾਈਲਾਂ ਚਿਪਕਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਨੇ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਤਾ ਕਿ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਇੱਟ ਦੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਨਮੀ ਕੈਦ ਕਰ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਸੀਂ ਇਮਾਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਉਂਦਾ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਸੀ, ਇਹ ਹੁਣ ਇਮਾਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਬਰਾਂ ਬਣਾ ਰਹੇ ਨੇ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“In historic Gurdwaras, we treated lime application as sacred service (sewa). Applying lime was considered pious because it gave a structure 500 years of life. Now even renovation teams are in a hurry; they smear cement quickly and paste marble tiles. They don’t realize cement traps moisture inside the brickwork. We kept buildings alive; they are turning historic walls into tombs.”
