“ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਦਿਮਾਗਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਵਰਗਾ ਬਣਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ—ਸਖ਼ਤ, ਸੁੱਕਾ, ਤੇ ਤੜਕਣ ਵਾਲਾ। ਚੂਨਾ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸਬਰ ਸਿਖਾਉਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਜਦੋਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ 15 ਦਿਨ ਇੱਕੋ ਦੀਵਾਰ ਤੇ ਥਥਾਈ (ਕੁਟਾਈ) ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਦਾ ਗੁੱਸਾ ਤੇ ਕਾਹਲੀ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। ਹੁਣ ਹਰ ਕੰਮ ਚ ਕਾਹਲ ਹੈ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਆਤਮਾ ’ਤੇ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਦੀ ਪਰਤ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਗਈ ਹੈ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“Cement has made our minds like cement—hard, dry, prone to cracking. Lime used to teach us patience. When you spend 15 days malleting a single plaster coat (thathai), all your inner anger and hurry vanish. Now everything is a rush. I feel as if a hard layer of concrete has coated my soul.”
