“ਚੂਨੇ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੱਥ ਠੰਢੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸੀ, ਚਮੜੀ ਨਰਮ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਚ ਗੁੜ ਤੇ ਤੇਲ ਮਿਲਾਉਂਦੇ ਸੀ। ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਨੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਉਂਗਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਨ (ਫਿੰਗਰਪ੍ਰਿੰਟ) ਹੀ ਮਿਟਾ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਨੇ। ਸਰਕਾਰੀ ਕਾਗਜ਼ਾਂ ਤੇ ਅੰਗੂਠਾ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਮਸ਼ੀਨ ਚੁੱਕਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ। ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਹੀ ਮਿਟਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“Working with lime kept our hands cool; the skin retained moisture because we mixed jaggery and oils into it. Cement has literally burned away the fingerprints on my hands. When I try to place my thumbprint on official biometric readers, the machine fails to scan it. Cement erased our very identity.”
