“ਮੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ 80 ਸਾਲ ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਦੀਆਂ ਪੁਰਾਣੀਆਂ ਡਿਓੜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਚੂਨਾ ਲਾਇਆ ਸੀ। ਹੁਣ ਜਦੋਂ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਲੋਕ ਨਾਨਕਸ਼ਾਹੀ ਇੱਟਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਦਾ ਪਲਸਤਰ ਕਰਕੇ ਉੱਪਰ ਪਲਾਸਟਿਕ ਪੇਂਟ ਲਾ ਰਹੇ ਨੇ, ਤਾਂ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਦੇ ਮੂੰਹ ਚ ਜ਼ਬਰਦਸਤੀ ਜ਼ਹਿਰ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੋਵੇ। ਇਹ ਇਮਾਰਤਾਂ ਘੁੱਟਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਰ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਨੇ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“I am 80 years old. I applied lime to the historic entry gates (deordis) of Amritsar with my own hands. Now when I see people slapping cement plaster over delicate Nanak Shahi bricks and painting acrylic over it, it feels like forcing poison down an old man’s throat. These buildings are suffocating to death.”
