“ਚੂਨੇ ਦਾ ਖੱਡਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਮਸਾਲਾ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਜਗ੍ਹਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ, ਉਹ ਸਾਡੀ ਪੰਚਾਇਤ ਸੀ। ਉੱਥੇ ਬੈਠ ਕੇ ਮਿਸਤਰੀ ਇੱਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ-ਸੁੱਖ ਵੰਡਦੇ ਸੀ, ਨਵੇਂ ਮੁੰਡੇ ਉਸਤਾਦਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਸਿੱਖਦੇ ਸੀ। ਹੁਣ ਤਾਂ ਠੇਕੇਦਾਰ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਘੜੀ ਦੇਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, “ਅੱਧੇ ਘੰਟੇ ਚ ਮਾਲ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰੋ।” ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਈ, ਭਾਈਚਾਰਾ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“The lime pit wasn’t just a place to mix mortar; it was our council. Sitting around it, masons shared their personal sorrows and joys, while apprentices learned by listening to the masters’ wisdom. Now the contractor arrives, looks at his watch, and barks, “Prepare the concrete mix in thirty minutes!” Conversation died; brotherhood dissolved.”
