“ਦੇਖੋ, ਚੂਨੇ ਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਨੇ ਗਰੀਬਾਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰ ਤੇ ਛੱਤ ਛੇਤੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ। ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਛੋਟਾ ਜਿਹਾ ਮਕਾਨ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਚ ਛੇ-ਛੇ ਮਹੀਨੇ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸੀ, ਚੂਨਾ ਸੁੱਕਣ ਦਾ ਇੰਤਜ਼ਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਸੀ। ਅੱਜ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਨਾਲ ਦੋ ਮਹੀਨਿਆਂ ਚ ਬੰਦਾ ਆਪਣੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਕੀ ਛੱਤ ਹੇਠ ਲੈ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਚੂਨਾ ਅਮੀਰਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਹਵੇਲੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਧੀਆ ਸੀ, ਪਰ ਆਮ ਦਿਹਾੜੀਦਾਰ ਲਈ ਸੀਮਿੰਟ ਇੱਕ ਵਰਦਾਨ ਵੀ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੈ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“Look, lime has its own charm, but cement gave poor families a roof over their heads much faster. Earlier, building a small house took six long months waiting for lime layers to cure. Today with cement, a worker can bring his family under a sturdy roof in two months. Lime was wonderful for rich men’s havelis and sacred Gurdwaras, but for the common daily worker, cement proved to be a practical blessing too.”
