“ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਉਹ ਕੱਲੇ ਕੰਮ ਤੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਜਾਂਦੇ, ਪੂਰਾ ਘਰ ਉਸ ਕੰਮ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ। ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਹੈ ਜਦੋਂ ਵੱਡੀਆਂ ਹਵੇਲੀਆਂ ਜਾਂ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਸੀ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਵਿਹੜੇ ਚ ਗੁੜ ਦਾ ਘੋਲ ਤੇ ਮੇਥੀ ਦਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਉਬਾਲ ਕੇ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਸੀ। ਚੂਨਾ ਪਕਾਉਣਾ ਇੱਕ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਕ ਸ਼ਗਨ ਵਾਂਗ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਸੀ।”

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“Back then, he didn’t go to work alone; the whole household was connected to it. I remember when work on big Havelis or Gurdwaras was going on, I would boil the jaggery syrup and fenugreek water right in our courtyard. Preparing lime felt like a sacred family ritual.”
