“ਮੇਰੇ ਦਾਦਾ ਜੀ ਦੇ ਜ਼ਮਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਸੰਦ—ਚੂਨੇ ਦੇ ਲੱਕੜ ਦੇ ਗੁਰਮਾਲੇ, ਅਕੀਕ ਦੇ ਪੱਥਰ, ਤੇ ਛਾਣਨੀਆਂ—ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਦੇ ਪੇਟੀ ਚ ਜੰਗਾਲ ਖਾ ਰਹੇ ਨੇ। ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੁੱਟ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ ਤੇ ਵਰਤ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦਾ। ਉਹ ਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵੱਡ-ਵਡੇਰਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਦਸਤਖ਼ਤ ਨੇ। ਪਰ ਮੇਰਾ ਪੁੱਤ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖ ਕੇ ਪੁੱਛਦਾ ਹੈ, “ਪਾਪਾ, ਇਹ ਕਬਾੜ ਕਿਉਂ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਹੈ?””

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

“My grandfather’s tools—wooden float trowels, agate burnishing stones, and horsehair sieves—are rusting inside a chest under my bed. I cannot throw them away, nor can I use them. They aren’t just tools; they are the signatures of my ancestors. But my son looks at them and asks, “Papa, why are you keeping this junk?””
